Thousands of healthcare workers engaged in Kenya's Universal Health Coverage (UHC) program are set for permanent employment after county governments agreed to absorb them.

The decision was reached during a special Intergovernmental Budget and Economic Council (IBEC) session chaired by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki.
Eligible UHC workers will be placed on permanent and pensionable terms, with financing secured through the County Governments Additional Allocations (CGAA) for the 2026/27 financial year.
This move is expected to address grievances driving the ongoing nurses' strike and ensure county governments are not financially burdened by the increased wage bill.
