Africa's richest man, Aliko Dangote, has announced that construction for the planned Lamu oil refinery in Kenya will commence on September 30, 2026.

The refinery is projected to have a daily processing capacity of 700,000 barrels of crude oil.
The project, with a revised cost of Sh2 trillion, will be financed by 70% debt (approximately Sh1.45 trillion) and 30% shareholders' funds (about Sh621 billion).
This facility aims to reduce the region's dependence on imported refined petroleum products and supply Kenya and neighboring markets like Uganda, Tanzania, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
