Trade unionist Francis Atwoli, the secretary-general of the Central Organisation of Trade Unions (Cotu), has vowed to prevent any further family cremations, stating his opposition to the practice.

• Atwoli reluctantly agreed to the cremation of his daughter-in-law, Maureen Achieng Nyadida-Lukoye, on September 7, only because her father did not object.
• He declared his intention to override any future cremation wishes within his family as long as he is alive.
• Atwoli believes cremation is not modern and advocates for Africans to adhere to their traditions.
