A new report highlights that Kenya is among six IGAD countries facing severe acute food insecurity, with 40.3 million people affected across the region by 2026. This crisis has nearly tripled since 2016, driven by conflict, extreme weather, and economic pressures.
- About 2.7 million people in Kenya's arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs) experienced Crisis or worse conditions between July and October 2026.
- The Global Report on Food Crises 2026, launched regionally on September 24, identifies Djibouti, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, and Uganda as the most affected countries.
- The crisis is also impacting nutrition, with an estimated nine million children aged six to 59 months suffering from acute malnutrition across the six countries.
