The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has introduced new fines for homes and businesses that feed excess solar power into the Kenya Power network without approval.

• Homes and businesses feeding excess electricity into the grid without approval will be charged a dumping surcharge at the applicable base tariff.
• The new measures are outlined in the amended 2023 tariff schedule and the Energy (Net-Metering) Regulations, 2024.
• Kenya Power also warned that unauthorized connections pose safety risks and can affect the stability of the national electricity network, which is increasingly impacted by intermittent renewable sources accounting for up to 36% of the energy mix during peak demand.
