Ahead of anticipated El Niño rains, the Ministry of Health has issued a critical food and water safety advisory to prevent potential outbreaks of water-borne illnesses and aflatoxin poisoning.

• Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni warned that heavy rains, flooding, and high humidity increase the risk of diseases like cholera and typhoid, and accelerate mould growth on food leading to aflatoxin contamination.
• The advisory targets households, food vendors, and businesses, urging immediate preparation to safeguard food and water supplies.
• Key recommendations include stocking water purification supplies, ensuring water tanks are clean and covered, storing dry goods in airtight containers, and advising food handlers to maintain hygiene and proper drainage.
