May 2026 was the worst month for electricity outages in Kenya, with customers experiencing the highest frequency and longest durations of power interruptions in the financial year ending June, according to a report by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA).

• Customers faced an average of 4.98 power interruptions in May, with the System Average Interruption Duration Index (SAIDI) reaching 27.33 hours.
• The EPRA report highlighted that the annual average interruption duration rose to 13.16 hours, significantly exceeding the regulator's 1.5-hour target.
• The prolonged and frequent power cuts disproportionately affect households and businesses, impacting daily life, work, and the broader economy, with the average interruption duration per customer now at 3.23 hours.
