Kenya has launched a new National Recovery and Action Plan for the Mountain Bongo (2026–2030), recognizing that the loss of even a single breeding female could set back recovery efforts by three years due to the species' critically endangered status.

• The plan aims to increase the national bongo population by 50 per cent by 2030 and reach 750 animals by 2075.
• Key figures involved include Environment and Forestry Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano and officials from the Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy.
• The strategy addresses challenges such as poaching, habitat destruction, disease, and the isolation of small populations, with an estimated Sh400 million required over five years.
