Speaker Wetang'ula Predicts Over 56% of MPs Will Not Be Re-elected
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula has predicted that over 56% of current Members of Parliament will not be re-elected in the upcoming general election, citing rising political temperatures and public dissatisfaction. A recent actuarial report also indicates that more than half of current Kenyan MPs will likely not be re-elected in the next parliamentary cycle. During a three-day legislative retreat in Naivasha, Wetang'ula advised lawmakers to invest in pension schemes due to the tough electoral landscape. Citing the high attrition rate, the Speaker also urged lawmakers to pass a Bill establishing a post-retirement medical scheme for MPs. This prediction was made amid concerns about the future political careers of the current legislators.

Divisions within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party have resurfaced following the demise of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, sparking concerns about the party's future. EALA MP Winnie Odinga has alleged that some ODM members face intimidation for holding dissenting views, claiming politicians are being de-whipped for appearing on political platforms with her. She also stated individuals are being asked to declare support for the current regime to receive rewards like Teachers Service Commission slots. Meanwhile, President William Ruto's United Democratic Alliance (UDA) is experiencing internal tensions regarding potential sacrifices to accommodate new coalition partners, specifically ODM, ahead of the 2027 elections.
