Private Hospitals Halt Services for Social Health Authority (SHA) Patients Over Unpaid Claims - September 2025

Private hospitals in Kenya, represented by the Rural and Urban Private Hospitals Association (RUPHA), are ceasing services for patients who cannot pay in cash, even those with Social Health Authority (SHA) coverage. RUPHA has announced it has not altered its stance on denying services to SHA inpatients who cannot pay in cash. The decision is due to unpaid claims from the SHA. This has led to patients suffering as they are reportedly refused services, leading to a breakdown in healthcare access.
