Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga is facing backlash for controversial remarks he made regarding the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has summoned the governor to account for his statements. Governors from three Mount Kenya counties and Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku publicly condemned the remarks, deeming them disrespectful. Following the comments, elders from Molo and Nakuru County, as well as leaders in Nyeri, are calling for Governor Kahiga's resignation. Pressure is also mounting on the Nyeri County Assembly to initiate impeachment proceedings against him. Governor Cecily Mbarire announced that the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party will take action against Kahiga for his remarks.
