Government and County Authorities Respond to Drought with Food Relief and Maize Imports - February 2026

Amidst ongoing drought challenges, a Kenyan individual has urged the government to increase its drought relief efforts. In response to the crisis at a local level, the Mandera County Government has launched a food relief distribution programme to assist vulnerable families grappling with the severe drought. On a national level, Kenya has secured a commitment from Zambia to supply up to one million 90-kilogram bags of maize to mitigate the impact of worsening drought conditions. This agreement was finalized during discussions between the agriculture ministers of both countries.
