Senior Counsel Charles Kanjama has been elected the 52nd President of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), winning the February 19 election to lead over 20,000 practising advocates.

• Kanjama secured 3,728 votes, defeating Peter Wanyama (2,616 votes) and outgoing LSK Vice President Mwaura Kabata (2,086 votes).
• He will serve a two-year term from 2026 to 2028, succeeding outgoing President Faith Odhiambo.
• The election was supervised by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), with 18,000 registered lawyers eligible to vote.

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula was barred from voting in the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) elections on Thursday after his name was found missing from the voter register due to the absence of a valid practicing certificate, a legal requirement for voting.

• Wetang’ula questioned the decision, arguing that his role as Speaker negates the need for a practicing certificate.
• IEBC official Dr. Owiso stated that the exclusion was not an administrative error but a legal requirement stemming from regulations adopted by LSK members themselves.
