Fuel Prices Drop After VAT Cut to 8 Percent - April 2026
Fuel prices in Kenya have significantly decreased following the reduction of Value Added Tax (VAT) from 13 percent to 8 percent. The new pump prices, effective from April 16 to May 14, 2026, reflect the adjusted tax rate as announced by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA). Additionally, the Kenyan government allocated Ksh6.5 billion to cushion citizens from rising global oil costs. However, the Consumers Federation of Kenya (COFEK) raised alarms about allegedly carcinogenic halogenated bromides detected in Kenya's fuel supply, prompting calls for regulatory intervention. The Senate Committee launched an investigation into a contaminated fuel shipment at the Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) facility in Mombasa, with allegations that authorities were aware of counterfeit fuel imports.
