The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched investigations into deaths and shootings that occurred during recent fuel protests across Kenya.

• IPOA is probing the death of Brian Ndung’u Njung’e in custody at Kiambu Police Station and the fatal shooting of Martin Rigii Karuu in Kiambu.
• The authority is investigating incidents linked to nationwide demonstrations against hiked fuel prices, which resulted in at least four deaths and several injuries.
• A postmortem revealed Ndung’u died from strangulation ruled a suicide, while witness accounts suggest an armed officer was involved in Karuu's shooting.

Kenya's Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, Geoffrey Ruku, has warned that state agencies failing to adopt the new Human Resource Information System (HRIS) risk having their salary payments frozen.

• Only 47 out of 575 state agencies are currently onboarded onto the HRIS platform.
• The directive impacts institutions including the National Police Service and Kenya Defence Forces.
• CS Ruku cited examples of payroll fraud, including ghost workers and irregular allowance payments, which the new HRIS aims to curb.

• IPOA has identified a specific officer believed to have fatally shot protester Martin Rigii Karuu in Kiambu Town on May 18.
• The authority is also investigating the deaths of at least five other individuals during the protests in Nakuru County and the death of Brian Ndung’u Njung’e at Kiambu Police Station.
• IPOA is reviewing witness accounts and CCTV footage and has assured the public of independent and impartial investigations.
