Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi has defended the challenging 2026/27 budget, citing significant economic pressures including external shocks, underperformance in revenue collection, and rising inflation. He presented Kenya's largest-ever budget, a Ksh4.8 trillion spending plan for the 2026/27 financial year. Mbadi stated there will be "no surprises" in the upcoming budget as most revenue-raising proposals have already undergone public participation. He announced plans to alter the VAT status for affordable housing projects, moving them from zero-rated to VAT-exempt under the proposed 2026 Finance Bill. Additionally, Mbadi stated that ongoing reforms at the Kenya Revenue Authority are expected to significantly boost tax collections in the upcoming financial year without the need for increased tax rates.
