Gachagua Accuses Government of Hypocrisy Over Protests and Disappearances - July 2026

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has accused the Kenyan government of hypocrisy regarding protests and alleged enforced disappearances. The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) has criticized the government's response to recent protests, citing alleged human rights violations. KNCHR has also issued a grave warning regarding the alleged resurgence of state-sponsored terrorism in the country. Gachagua has publicly urged President William Ruto to cease actions perceived as intimidation against journalists and media houses. The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has issued a stern warning to politicians, urging them to cease the sponsorship of individuals involved in political violence and unrest. Protests erupted in Mathare, Nairobi, following the alleged abduction of two activists, resulting in one fatality.
