The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has approved bribery charges against a Senior Principal Magistrate and a Senior Probation Officer inKangema, accused of soliciting money from a businessman for a favourable probation report.

• The DPP found sufficient evidence to charge the two for receiving a bribe, contrary to the Anti-Bribery Act.
• Martin Kinyua Mutegi (Senior Principal Magistrate) and Julius Irungu Njogu (Senior Probation Officer) were arrested on July 21 during an EACC sting operation.
• The case stems from a complaint by a businessman convicted of obtaining money by false pretences, who alleged he was asked for money on behalf of Magistrate Mutegi.

Magistrate Mutegi has been relieved of his judicial duties pending the outcome of the criminal case.
