High Court Halts Government’s Sh204bn Safaricom Stake Sale - September 2026

The High Court has delivered a significant setback to the Kenyan government, halting its planned sale of a 15 percent stake in Safaricom valued at 204 billion shillings. The Kenyan court had previously nullified the sale of 15% of Safaricom shares previously held by the government, ruling that the process failed to adequately involve the public, violating the constitution. Following the Supreme Court ruling that retired presidents are not permitted to hold positions in political parties, Retired President Uhuru Kenyatta stepped down as the leader of the Jubilee Party. President William Ruto subsequently criticized his predecessor, stating he has embarrassed himself by clinging to the leadership of the Jubilee Party. These rulings represent a major constitutional test for the Ruto administration.
