The Ministry of Interior and National Administration has terminated John Njuguna Burugu's tenure as Acting Commissioner for Refugee Affairs due to his concurrent holding of two public offices. He has been directed to return to his previous role at the Intergovernmental Relations Technical Committee (IGRTC).

• Burugu was appointed to the refugee affairs role in March 2023 by then Interior Cabinet Secretary Prof. Kithure Kindiki.
• The decision was ordered by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, through Immigration Principal Secretary Dr. Belio Kipsang, effective July 22, 2025.
• Burugu claims he did not draw salary from the Department of Immigration and that his substantive appointment was blocked despite him topping Public Service Commission (PSC) interviews in 2024.
