St. Peter’s Rigena Orthodox Orphanage Home in South Mugirango Constituency, Kisii County has been closed indefinitely due to allegations of child defilement and deplorable living conditions. This swift action followed the alleged defilement of a seven-year-old girl by the facility's proprietor.

• A multi-agency team led by Permanent Secretary of the State Department for Children Welfare Services, Carren Agengo, rescued 16 children from the unregistered orphanage.
• The proprietor, Johnson Otara, was recently released from police custody after his arrest for the alleged defilement, causing concern for PS Agengo.
• The orphanage, operating for approximately five years, was not registered with the government as a Charitable Children’s Institution (CCI), prompting a crackdown on illegal orphanages by the National Council for Children’s Welfare led by CEO Abdinoor Mohamed.
