The construction of Lot 1, Phase 1 of the Bagamoyo–Tanga–Horohoro/Lungalunga–Malindi Road Project, linking Kenya and Tanzania, is nearing 50% completion, according to Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo. This section, the Mombasa–Mtwapa stretch, is currently 43% complete and aims to enhance regional integration and economic development.
- The 13.5km Mombasa-Mtwapa section, begun in November 2022, includes 2.5km of dual carriageway and 27km of pedestrian walkways.
- The project is managed by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) and faces delays due to land compensation issues, which the government is addressing.
- The highway is expected to create numerous jobs, boost tourism, and strengthen diplomatic ties between the two nations, alongside environmental restoration efforts.
