Stephen Munyakho, the Kenyan man recently freed after 14 years on death row in Saudi Arabia, has publicly recounted the 2011 fight that led to his conviction, describing it as a salary dispute that tragically escalated. Speaking on Citizen TV’s JKLive, Munyakho (also known as Abdulkareem) stated the fight with his Yemeni colleague, Abdi Halim, resulted from a disagreement over his salary, culminating in a fatal stabbing.

• The confrontation, which Munyakho claims was his first physical fight, resulted in the death of his colleague, Abdi Halim.
• Munyakho was initially convicted of murder and sentenced to death by beheading, a sentence later commuted after the victim's family agreed to accept diyya (blood money).
• A total of Ksh. 129 million was raised with support from the Kenyan government and the Muslim World League to secure his release.
• Munyakho was freed on July 22, 2025, and deported to Kenya after completing all judicial processes.
