✨ Key Highlights
Kenyan football fans will experience the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology firsthand at the co-hosted 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), providing their first real-time interaction with the system previously limited to European match viewing. This marks a significant step in the local football landscape, bringing modern officiating to Kenyan stadiums.
- VAR is designed to correct "clear and obvious errors" in game-changing situations, operating on a "minimal interference, maximum benefit" philosophy.
- The VAR team comprises a main VAR (qualified referee), Assistant VARs (AVARs), and a Replay Operator (RO), stationed in a Video Operation Room (VOR).
- VAR can intervene in four main incidents: goal infractions, penalty incidents, red card incidents, and cases of mistaken identity.
- The CHAN tournament begins on Saturday, August 2, in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and concludes on Saturday, August 30, at the Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani, Kenya.
- Kenya’s Harambee Stars will play their first match against the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Sunday, August 3, at Kasarani, with tickets already sold out.
