A Nairobi court has approved the detention of Ugandan national Hellen Ikareut, who was extradited to Kenya to face drug trafficking charges. Principal Magistrate Irene Gichobi granted the application by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to hold her for investigation.

• Ikareut is accused of sending a suspicious shipment containing "greenish plant material" positive for narcotic substances, intercepted on May 18, 2023, at JKIA.
• The parcel, reportedly from Kitengela, was destined for Bahrain, to a man identified as Chris Kagawa Manana Godaibiya.
• Ikareut was extradited after fleeing to Uganda, with a Ugandan court ordering her extradition on April 15, following a request assisted by Interpol.
• She will be held at Embakasi Police Station for three days for weighing and analysis of the suspected narcotics and to record witness statements, with the matter set for mention on August 11.
• Ikareut had previously opposed the extradition, citing fears of rights violations due to perceived judicial shortcomings in Kenya.
