The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) has launched the Remittances Household Survey (RHS), a new program to collect detailed information on international remittances received by Kenyan households. Field personnel will visit homes to gather data on the amounts received from relatives abroad, how the funds are used, and associated challenges, aiming to inform policy formulation.
- In 2024, Kenya received Ksh666.7 billion in remittances, representing 4 percent of the country’s GDP.
- The program is a collaboration between the CBK, the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), and Financial Sector Deepening Kenya (FSD Kenya).
- This is the first time the CBK is undertaking such a comprehensive survey, which will also collect data from informal channels and in-kind remittances.
