Kenya's agricultural sector is set for a major transformation with the launch of the Warehouse Receipt System Council's (WRSC) Strategic Plan 2023–2027 and the Warehouse Receipt Financing Manual. This initiative aims to convert agricultural commodities into bankable assets, improving farmer access to finance and markets.
- The WRS allows producers to deposit commodities in certified warehouses and receive a receipt that can be traded or used as collateral.
- Regina Ombam, Principal Secretary in the State Department of Trade, highlighted the move will boost market linkages and strengthen value chains.
- To date, WRSC has certified 25 warehouses, onboarded 15 financial institutions, and registered 40 warehouse receipts in the central registry.
