Over 14 counties in Kenya, primarily arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs), are set to benefit from the Sh15 billion Kenya Off-Grid Solar Access Project (KOSAP). Headed by the Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi, this initiative aims to provide modern energy access to remote and underserved areas, targeting 300,000 households or approximately 1.5 million people by 2030.

• The project is financed by the World Bank and implemented by the Ministry of Energy through Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (Rerec) and Kenya Power.
• Key counties benefiting include Mandera, Garissa, Wajir, Marsabit, Isiolo, and Turkana, among others.
• The project involves constructing 114 mini-grids, 343 standalone public facilities, installing solar water pumps in 380 boreholes, and facilitating the sale of 250,000 stand-alone solar systems.
