Kenya is set to significantly decongest its main port in Mombasa by shifting transhipment cargo operations to Lamu Port beginning next month. This move, spearheaded by French shipping giant CMA CGM, aims to alleviate severe capacity strains at Mombasa and reposition Lamu as a specialized transhipment hub.

• French shipping company CMA CGM will shift all transhipment cargo from Mombasa to Lamu starting next month.
• Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) Managing Director Captain William Ruto highlighted that overstayed containers in Mombasa, some for "months, some for years," will be evacuated to reclaim critical operational space.
• Mombasa Port's container throughput surpassed one million units by July 2025, nearing 92 per cent of its 2.18 million Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit (TEU) design capacity before year-end.
