Kenya and the United States are moving closer to a reciprocal trade pact, aiming to redefine their trade relations as the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) nears expiry. This push comes amidst new tariffs imposed by Washington on Kenyan exports.
Trade between Kenya and the United States stood at USD1.5 billion (Ksh193.86 billion) in 2024.
Trade Cabinet Secretary Lee Kinyanjui led a delegation for talks with United States Trade Representative (USTR) Ambassador Jamieson Greer in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday.
The proposed agreement is described as “crucial for securing long-term access to the US market for Kenyan products” and could potentially replace or improve upon the existing AGOA framework.
