The Kenyan government plans to relocate the Homa Bay GK Prison to facilitate the expansion of Tom Mboya University in Homa Bay County. This move, stemming from a directive by President William Ruto, will see 113 hectares of prison land transferred to the university for the construction of 5,000 housing units, including staff and student hostels.
The State Department of Correctional Services Principal Secretary Salome Beacco confirmed the relocation process, stating the Attorney General has provided a legal framework.
The prison will be moved to alternative land provided by the County Government of Homa Bay, with a public participation exercise and feasibility study to be conducted.
President Ruto initially ordered the relocation to the Vast Lambwe valley, citing the availability of underutilised county land for the prison, rather than the previous location which could be better used for university expansion.
