President William Ruto is under scrutiny for allegedly failing to honor a promise of KES 60 million to Kenya's national football team, Harambee Stars, for reaching the quarterfinals of the African Nations Championships (CHAN).

• The Harambee Stars reached the quarterfinals, where they were promised KES 60 million by President Ruto.
• Instead of the cash, President Ruto offered each player a KES 1 million deposit towards a KES 2 million affordable housing unit, stating, "The only free thing is this lunch at State House."
• This is not the first time President Ruto has been accused of unfulfilled football pledges, including a KES 50 million promise in October 2018 to the team for qualifying for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
