Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja faces an impeachment push, with Nairobi MCAs collecting 70 signatures to table a motion against him. Surprisingly, Irungu Nyakera, an ally of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and a contender for the Nairobi governorship, has publicly defended Sakaja, despite benefiting politically from his potential ouster.

• Nyakera, the Nairobi Patron of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), stated he cannot support the impeachment, stressing that Nairobians freely elected Sakaja in 2022 and democracy must be respected.
• The impeachment motion, supported by 70 signatures from 123 MCAs, cites grievances including Sakaja’s alleged failure to deliver on campaign promises, sidelining wards, and delaying bursary allocations and the Ward Development Fund.
• This marks a rare bipartisan alliance between United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ward representatives against the governor.
