Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o has called for urgent strategic planning to ensure sustainable urban development in response to increasing rural-to-urban migration. Speaking ahead of the African Smart Cities Conference, Nyong’o stressed the need for African cities to proactively prepare for population growth rather than forcibly returning migrants.

• Nyong’o warned that without adequate preparation, public services could be overwhelmed, deepening social inequalities.
• The Kenya Kwanza government is implementing affordable housing projects to combat informal settlements.
• Kisumu will host the inaugural Africa Smart Cities and Townships Alliance (ASCA) Convention from September 11–13, 2025.
