Kenya plans to significantly increase its power imports from Ethiopia, following the inauguration of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). Speaking at the dam's launch, President William Ruto hailed it as a "monumental achievement" and a symbol of Africa's self-reliance in developing transformative infrastructure.

• Kenya, currently importing 200 megawatts of hydropower from Ethiopia, is ready to sign a new power purchase agreement for additional supply.
• President William Ruto emphasized that increased imports would bolster Kenya’s grid stability, especially during droughts, and support its goal of achieving 100% clean energy by 2030.
• The GERD, expected to produce 5,150 megawatts, aims to meet Ethiopia’s domestic needs and provide a surplus for regional countries, despite ongoing opposition from Egypt.
