Kenya Develops Data Governance Policy and Builds New Data Center - September 2025
Kenya has initiated the drafting of its National Data Governance Policy, a framework aimed at regulating data collection, storage, sharing, and protection. The effort is led by the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy, in partnership with the European Union (EU) and Germany’s GIZ Digital Transformation Centre. This move is claimed by PS ICT & Digital Economy Eng. John Tanui to reinforce Kenya's position as a continental leader in data protection maturity. In a parallel development for the country's digital infrastructure, Airtel Kenya has broken ground on a new data center at Tatu City Special Economic Zone. This facility, developed by its Nxtra by Airtel Africa subsidiary, is set to be East Africa’s largest data center. The development aims to position Kenya as a major digital hub and reduce its reliance on overseas data services.
