Kenyan gold medallist and 3000m steeplechase athlete, Jairus Birech, nicknamed KapKitiyo, passed away on Thursday, September 18, at around 8:30 pm after a brief illness. He was 32 years old.

Birech was a highly decorated athlete, winning gold at the 2014 African Championships and the 2015 Diamond League, and silver at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
His death was announced by a family member and has led to an outpouring of condolences from politicians and fellow athletes.
Among those who mourned him was Kesses Member of Parliament Julius Rutto, who eulogized Birech as a disciplined and brilliant athlete.
