A joint initiative by UN Women, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), and the African Union Commission (AUC) is empowering young Kenyan women through coding and digital entrepreneurship. The program, African Girls Can Code Initiative (AGCCI), aims to create a direct pipeline of female tech talent into Kenya's growing digital economy.
- Since launching in Kenya in 2022, the AGCCI has trained 213 participants aged 14 to 25.
- The initiative has trained over 1,200 young women across Africa with support from international partners including the governments of Denmark, Belgium, Finland, Germany, and Siemens AG.
- Graduates have secured jobs at companies like Siemens, Safaricom, and CYBER RANGES, and founded movements such as Shield Maidens and the Space Shift Initiative to address digital safety and gender-based violence.
- The program aligns with Kenya's National Digital Master Plan (2022–2032) and Kenya Vision 2030, fostering collaboration between Kenya's Ministries of ICT, Gender, and Education to integrate technology and gender equality into the national school curriculum.
