The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has issued a 21-day directive to all County Governments in Kenya to reorganize dump sites and implement waste separation at the source, in line with the Sustainable Waste Management Act (SWMA). This move aims to transition towards a circular economy where waste is treated as a resource.

  • NEMA requires waste to be separated into color-coded bins: green for organic, black for general, and blue for recyclables.
  • The directive, issued on September 19, also mandates that waste transporters only carry segregated waste.
  • NEMA has also reiterated a 2017 ban on the manufacture, importation, and use of plastic carrier and flat bags, including garbage bags, urging the use of biodegradable alternatives.
