The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) announced a nationwide operation to clear hawkers and street families from footbridges and underpasses, accusing them of obstruction and making these structures unusable. This initiative aims to improve pedestrian safety and deter further loss of life, with the operation already underway along the Ruiru–Thika section of the Thika Superhighway.

A 2019 study indicated that pedestrian accidents increase by 40 per cent when footbridges are obstructed.
The operation involves collaboration with National Government Administrative Officers (NGAO), County Governments, and the National Police Service.
KeNHA plans to construct at least 17 new footbridges in Nairobi, including a Ksh100 million structure in Ruiru, Kiambu County.
