Effective December 1, 2025, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) will transition teachers from the Minet-Kenya medical scheme to a new premium medical cover under the Social Health Authority (SHA). This move addresses criticisms of the previous scheme and promises enhanced benefits.

The new SHA-based scheme will cover the teacher, their spouse, and up to six dependents, replacing Minet's coverage of up to eight children.
The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) and KUPPET have raised concerns about a mandatory 2.75% deduction from gross income under SHA.
Under Minet, senior secondary teachers had inpatient cover up to Sh1.3 million and outpatient benefits around Sh200,000.
