The incident occurred on Sunday, September 28, when the matatu reportedly swerved into the opposite lane for an ill-fated overtake.

13 family members died instantly, with a 14th victim succumbing to injuries the following day at St. Josph Hospital in Gilgil.
Witness Stephen Githinji stated the matatu driver drove into the opposite lane to overtake and did not return to his lane despite an oncoming truck.
The matatu owner and relative confirmed the driver, Elijah Mburu, had little sleep after a late night chatting before the trip to a family gathering in Solai, Nakuru’s Rongai Sub-County.
