Hezekiah Nyamau, an Olympic gold medalist and legendary Kenyan athlete, has died at the age of 88 after a long battle with cancer. His granddaughter, Felister Nyamau, confirmed his passing while he was undergoing treatment in a Nakuru County hospital.

• Nyamau won gold in the 4x400-meter Olympic race in 1972 and silver in 1968.
• He also served in the Kenya Defence Forces from 1963 to 1997.
• His family had recently appealed for government support due to the financial strain of his cancer treatment.
