The Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA) has denied claims of misusing Ksh1.03 billion contributed by tea farmers in Kericho and Bomet counties. The agency stated that the funds were used for their intended purpose: the construction of two small hydropower projects in the West of the Rift Valley.

• The alleged misused Ksh1.03 billion was contributed by farmers for two hydropower projects.
• The projects, Chemosit Small Hydro Plant and Kipsonoi Small Hydro Plant, are owned by Settet Power Generation Company, a joint venture of seven tea factories and KTDA Power Company Limited.
• KTDA confirmed that Ksh1.208 billion has already been spent on the projects, with the deficit covered by internal borrowing.
• The clarification follows recent discussions about disparities in tea bonuses between regions and upcoming farmer payments by October 15, 2025.
