The Kenyan government aims to connect 1.18 million new homes to electricity by 2027 through the renewed Last Mile Connectivity project. Initiated in 2015, this project seeks to provide free electricity connections, with customers paying monthly bills.
- The project, implemented by Kenya Power and the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Commission (REREC), has already completed 1,301,938 new connections in the past three years.
- President William Ruto announced that households will receive free electricity connections, including meters, only paying a monthly bill.
- The program, financed by the government, African Development Bank (AfDB), and World Bank, charges Ksh15,000 per connection, with payments deducted from 50 percent of token charges.
- The latest phase, funded by AfDB, targets 150,001 new connections across 45 counties (excluding Nairobi and Mombasa), involving the construction of 13 substations, 2871 km of 33 kV lines, and 6,798 km of additional power distribution infrastructure.
