A team of 21 hikers has begun a three-day ascent of Mount Kenya to raise awareness and funds for the critically endangered Mountain Bongo. The trek aims to mobilize Sh100 million for the Mount Kenya Bongo Conservation Sanctuary.

Pledges of Sh7.1 million have already been secured, including Sh5 million from the Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) Foundation and Sh100,000 from each participant.
Rachel Gathoni of the KPC Foundation stated there are fewer than 100 Mountain Bongos left in the wild.
The Mountain Bongo is listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List, with a long-term goal to grow the population to at least 750 individuals.
