KenGen is projected to earn an additional Sh1.8 billion annually in net profit from a new green fertilizer plant in Olkaria, Naivasha. This facility, powered by geothermal energy, marks a significant step towards sustainable agriculture and industrial growth in Kenya.

• The plant will produce between 200,000 and 300,000 tonnes of green fertilizer per year, marking Kenya as the first country in Africa to manufacture fertilizer entirely through renewable energy.
• The project is spearheaded by Kaishan Terra Green Ammonia Limited, a subsidiary of China’s Kaishan Group, utilizing 165 megawatts (MW) of geothermal power from KenGen under a 30-year agreement.
• President William Ruto highlighted that this initiative will lower input costs for farmers, promote sustainable agriculture, and contribute to global climate goals by preventing over 600,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually.
