Agriculture and Livestock Development Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe has called for treason charges against individuals selling fake seeds, emphasizing that such actions threaten Kenya's national food security. Speaking in Nyeri during the launch of new KEPHIS facilities on Wednesday, November 5, Kagwe urged Parliament to enact laws that impose the highest constitutional penalties for these offenses.

• Kagwe stated, "Anyone selling fake seeds is deliberately sabotaging the country...That is economic sabotage, and it should be treated as treason."
• The CS announced a national crackdown on fake seed sellers and cautioned farmers to buy only certified planting materials.
• Treason is defined in Kenya's Penal Code as betraying the nation and carries the death penalty; the last executions for treason occurred after the 1982 coup attempt.
• The Ministry is also pushing for the re-establishment of agricultural police to protect farmers from theft and illegal cherry hawkers.
