Kenya, Uganda, and South Sudan have initiated a nine-week feasibility study for the proposed Naivasha–Kisumu–Malaba railway line extension. This joint effort aims to assess the technical and financial viability of extending the modern railway from Naivasha to the Malaba border, eventually reaching South Sudan, to improve regional cargo movement and reduce logistics costs.
- The current railway line between Mombasa and Naivasha accounts for only 20 percent of all cargo transport.
- Transport Cabinet Secretary, Davis Chirchir, highlighted that the project aims to unlock regional economies and plans include opening the upgraded railway to private operators who will pay toll fees.
- Fred Byamukama—Minister of State for Transport, Uganda—emphasized that the railway will alleviate road congestion by shifting cargo from roads to rail, facilitating transport from Mombasa through Uganda to Juba and DRC.
