Indonesia has officially named former president Suharto a national hero, a decision met with strong opposition from activists and academics due to his controversial human rights record during his more than three-decade rule.

• Suharto was among 10 honorees added to the list of national heroes on Monday.
• The ceremony was presided over by Sitting President Prabowo Subianto, Suharto's former son-in-law.
• Kontras (The Commission for the Disappeared and Victims of Violence), a local rights group, condemned the designation as immoral, stating Suharto does not deserve the title due to alleged involvement in human rights violations.
